The couple fell in love and married two years later, in May 1974. But just three months later, Woodford's visa expired and he had to leave the Soviet Union and return to the United States.
He repeatedly tried to visit his wife in Moscow, but he was always denied entry. Irina, on the other hand, was not allowed to leave the country and was not even explained why. Newlyweds celebrated their wedding anniversaries with cards, photographs and phone calls.
More than eleven years later, Irina finally called Green to move to the United States. In late January 1986, she arrived at Baltimore-Washington Airport. Her husband, whom she had last seen over a decade ago and miles away, ending with enthusiasm and open arms. Reporters recorded the emotional reunion and Irina later recounted the experience in a book.
