What is volunteerism?

The term ‘volunteerism’ is derived from the Latin word voluntas which means

will, desire, wish, attitude, disposition or freedom. It is an activity which is

governed by its own members and not by any outside force or external control.

According to the Thesaurus free online dictionary, the term is related to the

principle of donating time and energy for the benefit of other people in the

community as a social responsibility rather than for any financial reward, or the

policy or practice of volunteering one’s time or services, as for charitable or

community work. According to The UN, the volunteerism lets people and

communities participate in their own growth. Through volunteering, citizens

build their resilience, enhance their knowledge base and gain a sense of

responsibility for their own community. Social co-hesion and trust is

strengthened through individual and collective volunteer action, leading to

sustai-nable outcomes for people, by people.
