It is at the end of the year that traffic becomes even more dangerous in Brazil. The

number of accidents increases across the country.

The season is a party season, but statistics show that a few thousand Brazilians will have

nothing to celebrate. It is just now, close to Christmas, that traffic accidents increase the

most. And the victims too.

In Brazil, more than 3,500 people die each month in traffic. But it is only December that

this number rises to almost 3,900. And the situation worsens near the last days of the

year. That's when the average number of deaths jumps 12% - from 116 to 130 per day.

There are a lot of people on the roads, on the streets, driving a car, motorcycle, bus, truck

or on foot. It seems that, at that time, everything is more important than the traffic rules.

[…]

“Driving is associated with choices. You choose to talk on your cell phone and drive. You

choose to walk at high speed. You choose to drink and drive. You choose not to wear the

belt ”, explains José Aurélio Ramalho, president of the National Road Safety

Observatory.

And the wrong choice makes a huge difference. The Road Safety Observatory says that

90% of accidents are related to driver behavior. And it is no use just having a new road

and a safe car.

“If there is a human error, both the highway and the vehicle, they are there to assist and

mitigate the fatal injury to the occupant. If we do not work on the issue of education, the

behavior of society, we will continue to have high rates of traffic deaths, ”says José

Aurélio Ramalho.
